“I was born in the year of the Tiger, so I turned 60 this year … I never thought I would ever be an old bat,” said Catherine. But at Warrior, she has shown to be as fit as a 20-year-old.
“Oops! Maybe 40 or 50” she quipped.
While there are occasionally some workouts which have been a little more of a challenge on the knees, taking a lower level option and having a positive mind frame have rewarded her with improvements in the movement over time.
“At Warrior, I feel I belong to a great group of extremely fit people (which is very true, they are all very fit) and that makes me feel young, fit and strong too.”
‘Sporty’ at a young age while growing up in Malaysia, Catherine had even represented Perak in swimming and sprint-board diving. She would have taken up ballet professionally, except for the reality of constant painful blistered toes.
Catherine resided beyond the shores of Malaysia for the past 40 years, mainly in London and Hong Kong. Then, a practising solicitor, she worked in corporate and private practice before retiring to Penang in 2018 with her husband, Charles and their two schnauzers. Juggling time to exercise with a stressful working life had been difficult; unhealthy hotel food options and portions on business trips made keeping a fitter lifestyle challenging. But after some internet research by Charles upon moving here, Warrior stood out among other fitness places to try out. They have not looked back since.
“No one judges you on how well you perform the exercises. You just get on with it. The coaches are excellent and I must say I now know what it feels like to be an athlete.
“It feels great and I can’t get enough of it. I have also made many Warrior friends, more friends than I can say I had in my life before coming to Penang. I look forward to every outdoor training session. Rain or shine!”
“60? It’s all in your mind!”
